Earnest A. Bates, M.D.

Dr. Ernest Bates, a San Francisco neurosurgeon, founded American Shared Hospital Services in 1977 and today is its chairman and CEO. American Shared Hospital Services is a publicly traded healthcare company with corporate offices in San Francisco, providing services to hospitals in 22 states.

Dr. Bates is a member of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Rochester. He also is a member of the Board of Overseers at UCSF School of Nursing, Board Member of the San Francisco Ballet and member of the Brookings Institution. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees at the UCSF Foundation and the California Higher Education Business Forum.

He is a past member of the Board of Governors, California Colleges, District 4 Medical Faculty Review appointed by the Governor, and was on the Professional Advisory Committee at the University of California Medical Centers appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly.

Dr. Bates received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1958. He received his M.D. degree from University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1962.

Dr. Bates completed a surgery internship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in 1962 and a neurosurgery residence at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco, in 1971. He was board certified in neurological surgery in 1973.

He is a member of several professional medical societies, including several in his specialty. He has written chapters in the publication "Textbook on Brain Tumors and Black-Related Diseases," and has given lectures to medical groups and business organizations.

He was appointed by Governor Gray Davis to serve on the nine-member California High-Speed Rail Authority.
