Donald G. Fisher

Donald Fisher is the founder and chairman of Gap, Inc., the San Francisco-based retail clothing chain.

Mr. Fisher and his wife, Doris, launched the Gap in August 1969 with a single store in San Francisco, initially selling only music and Levi Strauss jeans. Mr. Fisher created the idea after a frustrating experience shopping for a pair of jeans in a department store.

Over the next 35 years, Mr. Fisher as CEO and in 1995 Chairman, grew the Gap -www.gap.com- into one of the world’s best-known brands and largest specialty apparel retailers, with annual sales of approximately $15 billion. The company employs more than 165,000 people and operates more than 3000 store locations in North America, Europe, and Japan under the Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic brands.

In addition to his contributions to the dramatic growth and expansion of Gap, Inc. into a multi-billion dollar international corporation, Mr. Fisher has long been a community leader and philanthropist.

He serves on the board of trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is a director of the United Way of the Bay Area, the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco, EdVoiceTeach for America, and a governor of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Mr. Fisher founded the civic leadership group, SFSOS, and is also actively involved in the California Business Roundtable and the San Francisco Committee on Jobs.

Mr. Fisher has received three presidential appointments to the Advisory Council for U.S. Trade Representatives, and was named to the Presidio Trust board of directors by President Bill Clinton in 1997.

He is a member of the California State Board of Education, a member and former chairman of University of California Haas School of Business Advisory Council, and has served on the Princeton University Board of Trustees.
